CSRN Communications and Coordinating Center

The Cancer Screening Research Network (CSRN) Communications and Coordinating Center (CCC) is led by three senior principal investigators at Fred Hutch Cancer Center who bring complementary training and expertise encompassing all scientific and functional aspects critical to the CSRN mission. The CCC will develop study protocols and train and monitor the nine U.S. organizations that recruit participants to studies. Other investigators will provide additional expertise in recruitment and retention of minority and underserved populations, cancer diagnostic pathways and clinical practice more generally.

The CCC is Organized Into Four Units

Modeling and Evaluation Unit (MEU)

MEU provides expertise and guidance on multi-cancer detection test selection and critical trial design features through review of current literature and data relevant to screening for the targeted cancers, microsimulation modeling examining critical screening performance metrics, population level rates and our (limited) understanding of the natural history of cancer. Dr. Etzioni provides oversight of this unit.

Communications Unit (CommsU)

CommsU develops communications strategies and approaches and facilitates tailoring of study messages to the internal and external audiences. This unit maintains websites, social media feeds and participant messaging related to recruitment, trial participation and retention. The CommsU will also create a community advisory board of stakeholders to seek broader engagement in the design, implementation, and use of MCD testing in real-world settings. Dr. Ramsey provides oversight of this unit.

Clinical Unit (ClinU)

ClinU will provide training coordination, support, monitoring and quality assurance of ACCESS site operations, specimen testing and biorepository functions. They will also be responsible for centralized medical record review and coding of clinical outcomes, including medical record abstractions regarding MCD testing, potential adverse events, diagnostic procedures and results, and potential adverse effects. Dr. Anderson provides oversight of this unit.

Administration Unit (AdminU)

AdminU provides logistical support for all CSRN committees, working groups and national meetings. This unit develops and maintains all official study documents and central Institutional Review Board approvals, and develops and maintains all necessary affiliation and data use agreements. Drs. Anderson and Ramsey provide oversight of this unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

CSRN is the first large scale network to focus on cancer screening. It will be led by clinicians who perform cancer screening as part of their routine practice. CSRN will engage providers who work with large and diverse populations receiving routine healthcare in a variety of healthcare settings.

Yes. The CSRN plans to investigate a variety of emerging technologies for cancer screening. These may include screening methods that involve imaging, biomarkers, procedures, combinations of the above, or tests that have not yet been invented.

The first effort for CSRN is a pilot study called the Vanguard study which will inform the design of future large trials to evaluate MCD assays.

Because CSRN is funded through a cooperative agreement, NCI plays a role in all aspects of the CSRN. Read more on the NCI CSRN site.

Yes, CSRN will engage large and diverse populations receiving routine healthcare in a variety of healthcare settings. The funded ACCESS Hubs have detailed recruitment plans that include engaging participants from Federally Qualified Health Centers, rural populations, tribal nations and racially and socioeconomically diverse populations. The goal is to ensure that the results of the CSRN trials apply to diverse populations.
