Data Science Lab Training

The mission of Data Science Lab (DaSL) Training Team is to empower people at Hutch and beyond with data literacy through training and community building to do more with data responsibly for health sciences.

We have two major types of training with resources online and in-person:

General Learning

Materials are available for free to the general public covering a wide range of data-related topics from introductory programming in R to specialized domains like genomics, environmental health, shared computing, version control, software development and more. Learners can gain foundational skills as well as explore cutting edge applications of data science. 

Fred Hutch Learning

This suite of online and in-person materials provide Fred Hutch researchers and data scientists with training on Fred Hutch data-related practices and information on how to use tools at the Hutch, such as the computing cluster.

Computational Biology

For Trainees and Researchers

We welcome both computational researchers who want to learn about biology, as well as biologists who want to learn computational methods. The Fred Hutch is well equipped to bring people in the latter category up to speed. Comp bio faculty run MCB 536, a course to introduce computational tools to biology graduate students, and our scientific computing documentation is comprehensive and up to date.

SeattleStatGROWS

For Undergraduate Students
8 Week Summer Program

SeattleStatGROWS is an 8-week, mentored, paid summer research internship program aimed at increasing awareness and interest in careers in statistics and data science research. Partnering with agencies such as Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, students are paired with a mentor to complete projects within the fields of statistics and data science. Additionally, students participate in intensive R Studio training, attend professional development workshops, and engage in social activities.

Girls Who Code

For Girls 10th - 12th Grades
2-3 Sessions a Year and Meets Weekly After School

The Fred Hutch Girls Who Code club is an after-school club specifically designed for high school aged girls. It is organized and led by computational biology graduate students from Fred Hutch and UW. The club holds 2-3 sessions per year and meets on a weekly basis after school at the Fred Hutch campus.

Coding for Cancer

For Students 11th or 12th Grade
4 Week Summer Program

Computational skills are increasingly important in nearly all fields of biomedical research at the Hutch and beyond. Coding for Cancer connects students with computational biologists, teaches hands-on skills, and show how coding and computational tools are used in cancer research.

No prior coding experience is necessary.
