About the Office of Education and Training

Fred Hutch Cancer Center has a longstanding commitment to training the next generation of scientists and providing professional development opportunities for our faculty. Our Office of Education and Training (OET) houses educational and professional development programs for high school students, undergraduates, postbaccalaureate scholars, graduate students, postdoctoral and medical fellows, and faculty.

Our programs span the biomedical disciplines and research interests pursued at Fred Hutch — from basic, human biological, clinical, and public health sciences research to a range of cancers and infectious diseases — with a commitment to increasing access and creating pathways for those trainees historically excluded.

OET also oversees the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium's Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC), seeking to promote and strengthen the broad range of education and training opportunities across the Consortium institutions.

Jeanne Chowning

Jeanne Ting Chowning, PhD, Associate Vice President
Office of Education and Training

Dr. Jeanne Chowning focuses her professional efforts on supporting science teachers and promoting equity for students furthest from opportunity. She leads several federal science education grants centered on teacher professional learning, curriculum development, and student research experiences. Trained as a learning scientist, her current research interests center on the development of scientific interest, identity, and sense of belonging in youth from marginalized groups; the social and cultural dimensions of science; and the role of teacher professional development and learning communities in promoting productive classroom discourse.
