Medical Oncology

“I’m fortunate to work with some of the most dedicated people: our nursing staff, who provide phenomenal care to our patients. I have always wanted to practice with professionals of this caliber.”

— Dr. Perlov

Why do you work at Fred Hutch and what do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

Because it’s organized like a hub with spokes, with solid integration with community sites, there’s a cooperative environment at Fred Hutch that helps us provide up-to-date, accessible oncological care.

We also have culturally and emotionally put cancer on a very high pedestal, so people feel their independence and autonomy is going to be diminished drastically. This is one of the most harmful things for many of us on spiritual and personal levels. One of my primary goals is to return as much of that agency and autonomy back into people’s hands as possible, and this environment supports these efforts.

What brought you to oncology?

The plan was urology and becoming a surgeon like my grandfather, so I did four years of medical school in Russia. Then, I moved to the United States and entered medical school here. But when it was time for rotations and selecting a specialty, I realized that to get through the next parts — the grueling and hard parts — I should feel the love for it, and I wasn’t sure. I took a pathology course and learned about some of the biological underpinnings of renal cell carcinoma, and I started to make sense of why things are done in certain ways with particular cancers. I realized I liked this molecular stuff and then had a rotation in medical oncology and discovered I loved every minute.

I decided against urology as a specialty a few days before the submission deadline.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Medical oncology, benign and malignant hematology

I am a physician who sees patients at Fred Hutch at Overlake Cancer Center.

Community Oncology

Our mission is to provide patients with the highest quality, personalized care closer to home. As part of Fred Hutch, our community oncologists offer patients multidisciplinary tumor board opinions, clinical trials and expertise in treating a variety of cancers.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
