“Working in health care provides me the opportunity to positively affect the lives of others, no matter what stage of life they’re in.”

— Matt

What drew you to the field of oncology?

When I was 14, my grandfather passed away from leukemia. This was a pivotal moment in my childhood; it was the first real loss I had ever suffered, and it had a lasting impact on me. I believe that I eventually channeled my emotions from this experience into the drive and compassion I feel when working with oncology patients today. People who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis are so inspiring, and the field of oncology is diverse and ever-changing. My first clinical rotation in oncology during physician assistant school only reinforced that this area of medicine was the perfect fit for me.

What do you want patients to know about working with you?

I focus on the whole person — not just a single aspect of your care. I recognize that each patient has their own needs and goals and faces their own unique challenges. My philosophy is to treat you with the respect and dignity you deserve by being a good listener, showing compassion and guiding you through the complexities of cancer care.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
