“I have patience, and I love human interaction. I feel honored when my patients come back to me; it’s a privilege to be the one to help people when they’re at a low point in their life. When somebody trusts me with their life, that creates a bond. I feel that with all of my patients.”

— Dr. Ferreira

How do you approach patient care?

I realize that this is all very shocking and frightening for my patients. I want to be a partner to help them navigate this situation. I work to give them the tools to make educated decisions along the way during this challenging part of their life. It’s important they have the understanding to make decisions, not only about treating the tumor or the cancer, but to really prioritize their wants and their quality of life.

What are your research interests?

I study tumors that are difficult to cure with conventional therapies like surgery, radiation and other systemic therapies we have at our disposal. We take tumors from the operating room and grow them in a dish. We study them genetically and epigenetically, in hopes of identifying biomarkers to follow the natural history of the disease in case the tumor recurs. Then, hopefully, we can develop targeted therapies for those tumors. This practice allows us to subspecialize in micro-facets of neurosurgery so that we can become world experts, essentially combining our academic interests with our clinical interests.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
