Hematology

“Each patient I see is more than an individual — they’re connected to a child, a sibling, a partner or a friend. They’re part of a family and community outside of the hospital, and I provide care with that in mind.”

— Joanne

Tell us about an interaction with a patient that had a significant impact on you.

One day, a woman stopped in on the floor where I was working to say hello. At first, I didn’t recognize her. But when I looked into her eyes and heard her voice, I realized she was a patient I had taken care of. She looked so different — her hair had grown out and she wasn’t pale anymore — but that spark inside her was still the same. Working in inpatient care, I don’t usually get to see people once they’re released from the hospital. To have her come back and tell me how well she was doing made me feel like I was part of her success. That day, she let me share in her remission, and I’ll never forget it.

How do you like to work with patients?

Each patient I see is more than an individual — they’re connected to a child, a sibling, a partner or a friend. They’re part of a family and community outside of the hospital, and I provide care with that in mind. I also strive to create a comfortable, calm and inclusive atmosphere. There’s no question that’s too frivolous, and I’m always available; even if I’ve just left the room, I will always come back. I’ll do everything I can to guide you through this experience and help you reach your goals, whether that’s a cure, remission or symptom relief.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Inpatient care, malignant and non-malignant blood disorders, blood and marrow transplantation

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) who has served on the bone marrow transplant service since 2009. Currently, I provide inpatient care at UW Medical Center, where I work with those who are being treated for a variety of malignant and non-malignant blood disorders. My expertise includes caring for patients undergoing a transplant as well as receiving immunotherapies or other treatments as part of a clinical trial. In addition to providing care, I am the inpatient advanced practice provider lead. In this role, I mentor new ARNPs and physician assistants and fulfill other leadership responsibilities.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
