Radiation Oncology

“Cancer is often a life-changing diagnosis that affects not only the patient but also their loved ones. I strongly believe in an individualized approach to care that includes clear, compassionate, open communication.”

— Dr. Takayesu

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the sheer number of decisions that had to be made during an already stressful time was paralyzing. This experience was formative for my career.

My duty is to provide you with a compassionate explanation of where your diagnosis stands now and a thorough understanding of what lies ahead. Shared decision-making does not mean that I will give you half-baked views on treatment options and leave you to make one of the most important decisions of your life. It means I will take the time to learn about you and your values to make sure we develop the best care plan for you.

Do you have a story about a patient you’d like to share?

A patient was having difficulty communicating with the physicians and staff on his care team in the hospital. While we were discussing his prognosis and treatment plan, he suddenly opened up to me about his love for his niece, sharing pictures of a rocking chair he made for her. He was eager to get out of the hospital to spend time with her, so we worked together on specific steps to get him home safely as soon as possible. I always feel that it is such a privilege when patients not only allow me to provide medical care, but also allow me a glimpse into their lives and hearts.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Radiation oncology

I am a radiation oncologist who sees patients at Fred Hutch Cancer Center – Proton Therapy and Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center – Montlake.

My research interests are in cancer survivorship and how we can change radiation techniques and other services to improve functional outcomes after treatment.

I decided to work with patients who have cancer because I knew I wanted to provide empathetic care to people in great need. Radiation oncology can often cure cancer and significantly improve quality of life.

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
