Rehabilitation Medicine

“In cancer rehabilitation, we try to understand how a cancer diagnosis affects your ability to function in your life. These changes affect things like being able to work, caring for your family and returning to the activities that are most meaningful to you. I was attracted to this field of medicine because we can address aspects of a person’s life beyond the disease process to help patients live their life to the fullest.”

— Dr. Hunter

How would you describe your approach to care?

It’s very collaborative. My role is to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries and mobility impairments that can occur during cancer treatment. I partner with oncologists to help patients maintain and regain their strength, but I don’t do this alone. I work alongside physical, occupational, speech and lymphedema therapists. We keep your individual goals in mind as we create exercise and therapy programs.

Of all the cancer treatment centers, why should a patient trust Fred Hutch and your team with their care?

Fred Hutch understands that cancer treatment is about supporting patients throughout their cancer journey. Fred Hutch takes on that responsibility; they own it. Our patients have a comprehensive supportive care team that understands the challenges that come with cancer – during and after treatment. In addition to rehabilitation services, it can include pain management, integrative medicine, psychiatry, nutrition, palliative care, etc.  We work to get patients back to what’s important to them.
