Infectious Disease

“The thing that interests me most are infections within the immunocompromised. It’s amazing that these little microbes that healthy people are exposed to everyday might do no harm, but all it takes is one challenge like a bone marrow transplant or chemotherapy, and patients can get a full-blown infection from these common pathogens that wouldn’t hurt you otherwise. Luckily, we have tools to address these opportunistic infections. In this field, things are constantly moving. I think the part of being a physician that I love most is that you never stop learning.”

— Dr. Zamora

How would you describe your approach to care?

Within the context of infection, no two patients are the same. Even if they look identical on paper, how they respond to therapies and how their immune systems fight these infections can be very different. This patient-centered approach is very important, especially in the transplant setting. Fred Hutch is one of the foremost institutions leading the clinical trials that find new therapies. These trials are run by the global experts in their field. Fred Hutch has done so well by their patients that they are well renowned.

Why did you choose to specialize in infectious disease?

It was during medical school, when we were learning about the different pathogens, how they affect people and how these little microbes can cause such a wide range of disease manifestations. I also like that we actually do have cures. It’s incredible to be at the bedside and watch in real time how patients go from being severely sick to basically cured and free of infectious disease. It’s so gratifying that I felt this was a great specialty to get into.
