I started providing genetic counseling services in Fred Hutch’s high-risk cancer prevention clinics in 2016 and then joined Fred Hutch full-time in 2020. I live on the picturesque Olympic Peninsula and have the privilege of providing care for individuals at Fred Hutch Cancer Center – Peninsula in Poulsbo. Additionally, I offer telehealth appointments for individuals at other Fred Hutch locations. I work with individuals and families who have a personal or a family history of cancer. We explore how genetic testing can be used to answer important questions like:
- Could cancer run in my family?
- What's my risk of getting cancer or having it return?
- Could my family members, especially my children, be at risk?
- If I'm at risk, what can I do to protect myself and my family?
My journey into genetic counseling was deeply influenced by the loss of a sibling to complications from a rare genetic condition. This personal experience ignited my passion for a career in genetics. As a genetic counselor specializing in cancer, I am dedicated to assisting patients in leveraging their genetic information for personalized cancer care and preventive strategies.
Helping people from diverse backgrounds navigate decisions about incorporating genetic information into their care is truly fulfilling. It's motivating to provide information that could contribute to preventing cancer in an individual or their loved ones. My perspective and approach are deeply rooted in a worldview framed by hope.
Outside of work, I cherish spending time with family, bicycling and engaging in overlanding adventures (a fusion of camping and off-roading).
Patient Care Philosophy
Genetic testing can be complex, but our discussions don't have to be. I strive to simplify information and tailor it to what will guide patients in their next steps. Understanding their values and the current season of life helps me provide personalized guidance. Whether they are motivated by tailored treatment, preventing future cancers or informing relatives about potential risks, we work together to make informed decisions. If genetic testing feels overwhelming for their current situation, we can plan to revisit it in the future.
You are unique, and I am here to offer not just expertise but also a caring presence as we navigate these important decisions together.
