I have been a genetic counselor since 2007 and have been working at Fred Hutch since 2018. I primarily see patients at the South Lake Union Clinic. I decided to become a genetic counselor because I loved learning about the science of genetics, but lab work wasn’t for me. I wanted to work with people and help them understand and benefit from genetic information.
I believe that learning about genetic risks for cancer can be empowering. Having a genetic condition doesn’t mean you will get cancer, but it can help personalize your screening and care plan. It is very rewarding to see patients or families whose cancer was caught early, prevented or treated more successfully because of genetic information. Another rewarding aspect of my job is working with students who are studying to be genetic counselors. I was voted the 2024 UW Clinical Supervisor of the year by University of Washington genetic counseling class.
Outside of work, I love to read and make pottery. My spouse tells me we have too many mugs already.
Patient Care Philosophy
Genetic information can be complicated. My job is to make it easy to understand and focus on what is important to you.
I believe genetic counseling and testing should be accessible! If you are encountering barriers to care, please let us know. We have options available to help make the process easier, including telehealth visits and financial support to help with the costs of genetic testing.
