Fred Hutch Administrative Fellowship Program

Fred Hutch Cancer Center is a nationally ranked cancer hospital and the top-ranked cancer hospital in the Northwest region. The Administrative Fellowship Program is a prestigious one-year program designed for early careerists in healthcare administration. The program is both rotational and project-based because it allows fellows to develop their leadership style and build upon their skills while immersing themselves in a fast-paced environment. Fellows will engage closely with executive leaders, gaining direct exposure to strategic initiatives, operational processes, and organizational governance.  The program includes the following support structures for fellows:

  1. Teaching and mentoring environment​
  2. Experiential career learning and talent development
  3. Supports transition from graduate academics to real-life application and hospital administrative management
  4. Provides executive and senior level leadership rotations in cross-organizational departments and offers complex project assignments​
  5. Ensures comprehensive exposure to clinical operations, strategy, and research as it relates to exceptional cancer care

Program Model

The fellowship follows a one-year rotation and project-based model, consisting of both Executive and Service Line Rotations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fellow directly reports to Rhianna Wardian, Service Line Manager at Fred Hutch Cancer Center for Gynecologic Oncology and Supportive Care Services. Rhianna directly oversees and guides the administrative fellowship program. She also serves as the fellow’s supervisor and provides professional guidance, mentoring and support during the fellowship program. 

  • Health care experience (preferably within a health care system)
  • Strong academic record 
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Ability to be flexible, intuitive and inventive
  • Self-motivated and team oriented
  • Conducts self in a professional manner
  • Keen desire to learn and grow as a leader in healthcare

Administrators submit project proposals to the fellow and preceptor. The fellow then meets with the preceptor to identify projects that align with the overall organizational priorities of Fred Hutch and the fellow's personal and professional goals.

At the start of the fellowship program (July 2025), students must have completed and/or be on track to complete their master’s degree in health administration (MHA/MHSA), Public Health (MPH), Business Administration (MBA) or similar master’s degree program in a related field of study. Applicants should be in the second year of their coursework, except in programs where the second year is a residency.

You must have received your degree or will receive your degree within twelve months of the start of the fellowship.

Yes, this is a full-time position and fellows are expected to work Monday through Friday.
