We are working to help improve breast health care for Black women everywhere — and we need your help. If you identify as a Black woman over the age of 40, and you have either never had a mammogram, or you haven’t had one in two or more years, we want to hear from you. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and UW Medicine are doing a study that will help improve breast care in our region.

People who join the study will do one to three virtual interviews that last about one hour each, talking with a community member. You will get a $75 gift card after each interview. If you join, you will also be able to get a screening mammogram at one of our many locations throughout King County, regardless of your insurance status. Contact us below to join the study.

Your Voice Matters

You can help us keep Black and African American women from dying because of breast cancer. Our mission is to hear and listen to your voice.

Breast cancer is a public health crisis, and it is critical that the solutions are centered around Black/African American women. In a racially biased health care system, your voice has not been listened to. But your voice is valued and necessary.

We can work together to create a health care system that would support the health and longevity of Black and African American women. We will use your input to create action plans that help more Black and African American women get mammograms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Women over 40 years old who have never had a mammogram, or who have not had one for more than two years, can be a part of this study.

This study will involve one or two remote (online) video interviews, each about an hour long, with our community partner Bridgette Hempstead.

We will ask for your input about mammography and primary care, and what you think would be the best and easiest way for women to get their mammograms. For each interview, you will be compensated for your time with a $75 gift card.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. Even though white women are more likely to develop breast cancer, Black women are 40 percent more likely to die from it. Annual screening mammograms save lives by finding cancer early, when it is smaller and easier to treat.

In the Seattle area, only about 60 percent of Black women get screening mammography, but 70 percent of white women get screening mammography. Building a system that serves you better, and helps more women get screened, will help save many lives. We are proud to partner with Cierra Sisters in this effort.

If you would like to join our study, please call us at 206.606.4553 or email BreastEquity@fredhutch.org.

The Fred Hutch echnologists and radiologists who do your screenings and read the results specialize in breast imaging. Our radiologists are certified by the American Board of Radiology. They have extra training in breast imaging and are better than the national standards.
